Pearl Harbor - An Act of Infamy

When: Wednesday, December 02, 2009 - 7:00 PM
Where: Meeting Room

It was then the largest strike force ever assembled - thirty-three ships, including six carriers. At 6:00 a.m. on the tropical morning of Dec. 7, 1941, this Japanese force was positioned 275 miles north of Pearl Harbor on Oahu, Hawaii. It launched two separate attack groups of torpedo bombers, high level bombers, dive bombers and fighters. The surprise was complete. The terrible attack that followed started at 7:53 a.m.; by 9:55 a.m. it was all over. And by 1:00 p.m. the Japanese carriers were heading back to Japan. Behind them, they left chaos - twenty-five hundred American dead, air fields destroyed, civilians hurt and killed - and our American fleet anchored at Pearl Harbor left crippled. The attack plunged the United States into WW II.

See slides of Pearl Harbor from the sky as the attack pilots saw it, the actual attack, the horrific destruction of USS Arizona (1170 American heroic sailors and Marines are entombed aboard her yet), and the ship as it rests in thirty feet of water today. Visit the elegant Arizona Memorial. Hear why the code "Tora,Tora, Tora" was used. Learn why the Japanese had to modify their torpedoes before the attack, and how the Nevada was able to get underway during the attack. Learn what a cruise ship had to do with the attack as well as what happened to the Japanese leaders after the attack. Learn how surviving members of Arizona are now electing to join their shipmates in eternity. And what did a cruise ship have to do with the attack? In the end, the Japanese made two huge errors - what were they? Read the rare, Dec. 7, 1941 Extra edition of the Honolulu Star Bulletin. Pres. Roosevelt called Dec. 7th "A date which will live in infamy.”

Dr. James Kane is a former teacher, principal, and for twenty-five years, a Superintendent of Schools and is now an Adjunct Professor at William Paterson University. He earned a Masters of Arts degree and the Professional Diploma, a 6-year degree, from Columbia University. His doctorate was awarded following doctoral studies at New York University and Fairleigh Dickinson University. He has served as a United States Marine infantry officer in the Fleet Marine Force, Pacific. A recipient of the Governor’s Award, New Jersey’s highest honor in education, he was elected in 1997 to Who’s Who in America.

No children under age 7 permitted.

Someone Must Wash the Dishes

When: Wednesday, December 09, 2009 - 7:00 PM
Where: Meeting Room

Actress Michele LaRue will perform as the fictional speaker in this satiric monologue written by staunch pro-suffragist Marie Jenney Howe back in 1912, and directed by Warren Kliewer.

Howe wields cutting humor, using the anti-suffrage movement’s own arguments to deflate the opposition. LaRue delivers the monologue to a gathering of like-minded women, ironically proving Howe’s pro-suffragist points. Following the performance, the presenter explores issues addressed by both sides, putting into context anti-suffrage arguments that may sound ludicrous to us today but were defended with dead seriousness in their time. Reviewers have called this production “wicked” in its wit, and have labeled LaRue’s performance “side-splitting.”

The production is produced by The East Lynne Company, the only theatre company in the country that is dedicated to reviving American plays and other literature of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This program is offered through the Horizons Speakers Bureau of NJ Council for the Humanities, a state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

No children under age 7 permitted.
