Management and Leadership: Which Hat Should You Be Wearing?

Event Type: Webinar
Date: 11/4/2009
Start Time: 1:00 PM
End Time: 3:00 PM
Description:
The differences between management and leadership are about what you pay attention to when solving problems. Confusing the two concepts can mean using the wrong sets of conceptual tools when dealing with library users, employees, co-workers, and bosses. For special librarians who have to shift between both roles, it is too easy to get stuck in one or the other. Getting stuck in the management role, for example, can mean focusing too much on maintaining old systems and sacrificing the mission and vision in order to avoid risk and not disturb the status quo. It can also mean being seen by institutional leaders as less than equal to decision makers in the institutions you serve. On the other hand, getting stuck in the leadership role can result in an inability to deal with sometimes mundane but important operational concerns. When that happens, you can be perceived as abandoning established goals to chase the next bright, shiny thing. Learn what the differences are between management and leadership and how to grow your skills and strength in both roles.

Who Should Attend?
Current and potential special library managers and leaders and people in charge of change management, training and succession planning.

Critical Learning Questions

What are the main differences between management and leadership, and why should it matter to you?
What are the scope and scale of each role and how do they differ from professional and technical tasks, such as referencing, cataloging and using Library 2.0 tools?
How can a special librarian in a small information center juggle both roles?
What blind spots are inherent in each role, and how can they hurt your career (as well as your library)?
