A World Without Heroes
Author
Brandon Mull
Review
A World Without Heroes is the 1st book in Brandon Mull's new Beyonders series. It is about a 14 year old boy named Jason who is accidentally transferred to a strange fantasy world called Lyrian after he accidentally falls into the mouth of a hippo while cleaning its cage at the zoo. Upon entering Lyrian he is quickly finds himself on a dangerous quest to bring about the end of a evil wizard emperor who rules the land.

This is a great new series by the author of the Fablehaven series. Unlike Fablehaven which uses fantasy themes, places, and creatures that would be familiar to any fantasy reader, like dragons, sphinxes, fairies, etc.., the Beyonders series is set in a brand new world which is fully Brandon Mulls creation and is populated by all sorts of bizarre people, places, and creatures. It is fast paced, exciting, and new. Being a big fan of the Fablehaven books I had high expectations for this book and they were definitely met. Try it and you will be sure to join me in eagerly awaiting the release of book 2!

Enders Game
Author
Orson Scott Card
Review
Enders Game is the story of a young boy named Ender who is growing up in a future where the world has twice lost brutal wars to an alien species called the "Buggers", because they look like human sized bugs. The military has developed a plan to train the next wave of super commanders to fight these aliens by taking promising children into space and training them in a special command school, where they learn, study, and mostly play war games in a zero gravity environment. Think super advanced laser tag or paintball with no gravity and you can kind of picture these games. Ender turns out to be the world's best hope at being that commander can win the war, but only if they can get him through battle school without killing him first.

This has long been one of my favorite Guys Read type books, and when asked what my favorite book as a kid was is usually my go to answer. The best part about the book is there have been a whole host of sequels to follow which are all great, and supposedly a movie is coming out someday. This book is exciting, fast paced, and action packed! If you check it out you won't be disappointed.   Request this book

Talking to Dragons
Author
Patricia C. Wrede
Review
Not your typical fairy tale... Daystar is living a normal, boring life on the edge of the Enchanted Forest until the day his mother melts a wizard (yes, MELTS him), then gives Daystar a sword and sends him off into the forest on a quest. Except she can't really give him any details about what he's supposed to DO on this quest, so he must figure it out on his own. Along the way he meets a zany cast of characters including a tempermental fire witch and a comical young dragon, and I dare you not to laugh out loud at least once as you read about the crazy adventures they have together!  Request this book
