Increase your comfort level and optimize the powerful tools available in the FirstSearch reference and Resource Sharing interface. This workshop will address how to access FirstSearch, search WorldCat, navigate and manipulate lists of records, developing search proficiency.

FirstSearch Administrative Module

The functions of the FirstSearch Administrative Module can leverage your investment in your FirstSearch subscription and your visibility on the open web. This one-day online workshop will cover the various customization options for the patron interface. Participants will also learn to create links between authorizations, local catalogs, and Open URL services as well as enable deep linking to local catalog records to WorldCat.org. Statistical reports for reference and WorldCat.org will also be covered.

Empower the Patron: Unmediated Requesting in WorldCat Resource Sharing

Copy Cataloging with CatExpress

This course covers the copy cataloging workflow including searching, holdings maintenance, exporting and downloading records. OCLC MARC Basics for Everyone - Online

This online workshop provides an intensive introduction in three two-hour sessions to the OCLC MARC bibliographic format. While typically for staff performing original and copy cataloging, this workshop will also help interlibrary loan and reference staff improve their ability to search WorldCat and precisely retrieve the records they need. Participants will learn:

The structure of the OCLC MARC record
The coding for the most commonly used fixed field elements and variable fields
How to access and efficiently use OCLC documentation

Libraries Helping Job Seekers in Hard Times

In the current economic climate, library resources are being used more than ever, especially by people hunting for work. Libraries are struggling to meet users’ needs for assistance with all aspects of the job hunt, from resume creation to the actual application process. On top of that, library staff must grapple with patrons’ varying skill levels and the additional demands these create for staff.

This online workshop focuses on available resources, many of which are free, to help you help your users. We’ll be discussing ideas for addressing the challenges presented by job seekers and encourage workshop participants to brainstorm strategies for their libraries.

This two-day online workshop runs Tuesday, December 15th and Wednesday, December 16th from 2-4pm both days. The cost is $150 and offers 4 hours of CE credit. Registration is required.
